I draw with the the false impression of childlike simplicity; spontaneous mark-making, collage, 1975, the couch in Michael’s house, Stevie Nicks in a frame. Gouache, neo-color, mud, dirt, hair, ink blots; Sonic Youth, sun burn (SUN BURN?) sand, the ocean. skateboarding, surfing, unplanned trips, this is happening. Fine, Rilo. Get on my lap. unintentional layers, open screens, paint flying. You can’t convert neon to CMYK, it’s the fifth color.
My work is grounded in an analog process, I am enamored by a trace of the artist’s hand. The technique is often naive in style, motivated by artists on the fringes of society. I utilize recycled materials; house paint, old paint, new paint, mixed up paper, fabric, nail polish. The work ranges from dense chaotic complexity, stringing together text, line and flat color; to simple, direct portraits made with a squeegee. Colors are consistently bright and muted, seeking a sense of balance in their relationship.
I recently built my nest in Portland, OR.
